Phonics

  • We use the Read Write Inc. Phonics programme to support the teaching and planning of phonics. This programme is designed for 4-7 year olds learning to read and for 7-8 years olds needing to catch up quickly.
  • Phonics is taught daily in 40 minute sessions. Children are placed in small groups and are regularly assessed and moved between groups according to their reading development needs.
  • In Reception, we aim for all children to be able to read storybooks and non-fiction books closely matched to their developing phonic knowledge, take home books to share and above all develop a love of reading.
  • By the end of Year 1, we aim for all children to be accurate and speedy readers.

How can parents help at home?

  • Children take home a RWI ‘Book Bags' Storybook every week. This matches the book they have read in school but is a new book not familiar to them.
  • Children take home the book they've been reading in their RWI group. This is a book they are familiar with and should be able to read confidently.
  • We encourage parents not to say ‘this is too easy’! There is guidance in the storybooks to support parents too.
  • If your child is tired/resistant to reading themselves, read to them! This is still benefiting them and promoting an enjoyment of reading, rather than turning it into a chore.

Order of Story Books:

When children are in the early stages of learning to read, they will bring home sound booklets, sound blending books and Ditty Sheets before reading books.
