We are proud to be a community of faith and learning at St Joseph’s. In humanities we believe that the Earth was provided by God and is ours to cherish. We endeavour to enable the pupils to make sense of their surroundings and the wider world, to help them in their understanding of how to be good global citizens and become independent thinkers. We believe children should see themselves as an important part of the society that surrounds them and be encouraged to have a curiosity about the differing people and events in their world now and long ago and understand the interdependence of lands, cultures and of different generations within a global ecosystem.

The ‘Humanities’ contribute to our learning of faith by:

  • Studying human history and the geography of the planet
  • Enabling pupils to understand the different areas of the world and the responsibility we have to keep it safe for all God’s family, human and animal
  • Enabling them to make sense of the constantly changing world in which they live.
  • Helping our pupils to understand their own lives by exploring the past
  • Enabling pupils to nurture the Christian values of understanding, respect and compassion.
  • Developing pupils’ understanding of ancient civilisations and the history of Britain and other parts of the world
  • Helping pupils to know how individuals have helped shape our society and values
  • Providing opportunities for pupils to make judgements based on historical evidence
  • Teach pupils how life has changed over long periods of time and make comparisons
  • Undertaking local history and geography studies in order to promote understanding of changes to , and influences on, their locality
  • Developing geographical knowledge and an understanding of the world and its peoples
  • Promoting a sense of national identity and place it within a European and global context
  • Undertaking geographical enquiry and promote awareness of global environmental issues.
